Friday, August 18th, 2017

Objective:
Students will determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, and analyze the impact specific word choices have on meaning and tone.

Students will analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision.

Warm-Up:
Students will use lines of dialogue to identify positive, neutral, and negative tones within a story.

RL. 8.4
Classwork:
  1. Read and annotate the short story titled “Charles” by Shirley Jackson
  2. Students will do a close reading of Charles, identifying how particular lines of dialogue reveal aspects of a character.
  3. Students will complete text-dependent questions for the short story.

RL. 8.3 and RL.8.1
Homework:
  1. Review, sign, and return the Parent and Student Handbook Verification form to  your period 3 teacher.
  2. Bring your Brown Bag Autobiography to class on Monday.
